The Atomic Recruitment team is committed to supporting local community charities. The main focus of our donations is towards the educational advancement and sponsorship of underprivileged children.
Nearly 3 million of Shanghai citizens come from neighboring provinces and do not hold the Shanghai residency permit.
As a consequence they are not entitled to special citizenship benefits such as schooling. In fact a large proportion of them (36% of those under 12 years old and 60% of those from 12 to 16 years old) do not attend school.
Although municipal schools may in fact enroll them, few do so. Private schools catering exclusively to migrant workers' children have sprung up. They are tolerated but not legalized, and rely solely on school fees for their funding.
These schools often have an insufficient number of qualified teachers and charge high school fees (around 500 RMB per semester) which many migrant workers cannot afford to pay.
Integration is a private initiative of people who wish to give migrant workers' children a chance. The initiative comes under the patronage of the German Chamber of Commerce in China - Shanghai, which partly contributes to its funding.
Integration is working together with public schools willing to admit migrant workers' children and private schools offering a reasonable standard of teaching. The principals of these schools provide us with the names of the pupils most in need of help such as those pupils whose parents are unemployed or ill, and those from families whose income is below 500 RMB per month. Integration pays the tuition, book fees and lunch fees. Although we are currently sponsoring only a small number of children, we still hope to make an impact by encouraging migrant families to send their children to school and at the same time by encouraging public schools to admit these children.
In this project, Integration cooperates with the education department of the Chinese government and in turn receives support from it.
